Coilover Suspension
Construction of the threaded suspension
The threaded shock absorber consists of such elements as:
- Spring plate , whose task is to hold the main and auxiliary springs. It is also responsible for reducing spring vibration. It is most often made of aluminum.
- The auxiliary spring has a flat coil cross-section and keeps the main spring under tension. Under load, it creates a uniform whole.
- The intermediate ring connects and holds the main and auxiliary springs in the correct position. It can be made of aluminum or plastics such as polyamide.
- Buffers and covers , depending on the model and manufacturer of the coilover suspension, may have bumpers and covers. They prevent external contaminants from entering the piston rod.
- The main spring is one of the most important elements of the suspension. It is responsible for maintaining the weight of the car, as well as damping vibrations and transmitting them to the shock absorber.
- The threaded flange is responsible for the bottom support of the spring and determines its position. Thanks to the threaded construction, we are able to change the position of the flange and thus adjust the height of the car.
- The shock absorber column is most often used in twin tube technology. Inside the housing there are two cylinders (internal and external). In the inner tube (piston housing) there is a piston with valves. During compression, the piston is pushed down and the oil in the piston housing flows through the lower valve into the outer housing. During rebound, oil flows through the rebound piston. Check valves allow a controlled flow of oil from the outer to the inner housing.
Pros and cons of coilover suspension
Pros
The biggest advantage of the coilover suspension is the ability to adjust the height of the car without removing the springs. All we need is a jack and a dedicated key, which we receive in the set with the suspension. By lowering the center of gravity and stiffening the car, we gain greater stability, better and more confident driving and greater control over the car.
The visual issue of lowering is also worth mentioning. Reducing the space between the fender and the tire has a positive effect on the appearance of the car and gives it a sporty look.
Minuses
One of the downsides of the coilover suspension will be a reduction in ride comfort due to the stiffening of the suspension.
Coilover suspension may require more frequent service - by replacing other suspension parts like swing arm bushings. An important element that complements the assembly of the threaded suspension are Powerflex orMPBS polyurethane bushings from our offer. It is important to keep the thread on the shock absorber clean, because after a long time it may turn out that the thread is in poor condition and adjustment can be a problem.
What to look for when choosing a coilover suspension
When deciding on a coilover suspension, it is worth asking yourself what exactly we expect and what role the car to which we want to mount the popular coilover plays. We offer the manufacturer MTS Technik , which at a very affordable price offers suspensions with springs of a valued brand, which is Eibach. If we use the car at the weekend and occasionally drive for gold - this is an ideal proposition.
Another manufacturer is the German AP Sportharwerke . It is characterized by an ideal price-quality ratio. Thanks to the components made entirely by our western neighbors, we can successfully use it for everyday driving and enjoy failure-free operation.
For the more demanding, we also have products from manufacturers such as Bilstein - the B14 and B16 series. The B16 models have a 10-step adjustment of the shock absorber hardness, and the Eiabach Pro-Street-S series .
The last two from the company can be successfully considered a high-quality product that we can use for trackday events or occasional trips to the track.
